DOMAINPROS PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to prepare a domain for sale

A useful sales brief makes the opportunity understandable and the transaction manageable. It also helps decide whether brokerage, a portfolio listing, or a simple enquiry page is the right starting point.

1. Confirm ownership and readiness

Check the owner, registrar, sale approval, and authorized account access. Identify renewal dates and requirements that could affect transfer. Resolve uncertainty before representing that you can complete the sale. Keep credentials and transfer codes out of public enquiry forms.

2. Record current dependencies

The name may support a website, customer mail, redirects, or account recovery. Selling can affect each service. List what needs to move or be retired before closing. An unused homepage does not prove the domain has no operational role.

3. Set a considered pricing approach

Decide between a public asking price, qualified enquiries, or a negotiating range. Use evidence you can support and avoid unproven revenue or traffic projections. Historical offers and comparable transactions can inform a discussion without guaranteeing the same outcome.

4. Present the opportunity clearly

A page or listing should identify the domain, describe relevant potential use without exaggeration, and provide a reliable enquiry path. Keep availability, descriptions, and prices consistent across listings. Remove outdated claims and offers that no longer apply.

5. Define enquiry handling

Agree who answers, how offers are recorded, what qualifies interest, and which decisions need approval. Establish a broker's representation, fees, and boundaries before outreach. Review terms before committing to payment or transfer arrangements.

6. Plan completion

Record payment, escrow where appropriate, registrar steps, timing, and confirmation of completion. State what is included and what remains your responsibility. Check current registrar requirements and obtain appropriate professional advice for matters outside the brokerage scope.

A useful starting point

A clear brief and reliable enquiry process give serious buyers a useful starting point.
